Good morning and welcome to our first ever Virtual Family Camp (or as we like to call it, VFC). Today is going to be tons of fun. How cool is it that we have families from all across the country joining in? Thanks for coming!

This webpage you’re currently on will serve as your guide for everything you need at VFC. Just keep scrolling down as the day goes on to find the appropriate links for joining us LIVE on Zoom, watching the videos for Chapel & Variety Show, printing/viewing the home activity guides, and more! 1) PROMPTNESS ENCOURAGED. We will stay right on schedule today according to the times listed on this page. So just pretend you hear the Camp bell ring at the times listed below.

2) TAKE PICTURES & VIDEOS of you and/or your family having fun at VFC! At the very end of this page you’ll see a link to share your favorite photos. We’ll put these in an album on Facebook so you can see who else was attending VFC with you.

3) HAVE FUN! This might be the only Virtual Family Retreat we and you ever do, so let’s have some fun with it.

You might not have a lake to jump into wherever you are this morning, but that doesn’t mean Polar Dip still can’t happen! Come up with your own version or use one of the ideas we came up with. You better make it quick though, because Chapel starts at 10 and you still need to tidy up your “cabin” (room)!

IDEAS:

Hose each other down with the water hose!
Turn the shower on cold.
Dunk your head in a bucket of ice water.

Are you ready to have some fun? It’s time for morning activity options! This is the part of the day where you get to choose your own adventure. As you scroll below, you’ll see we have put together five (5) different activity ideas for you to choose from. Read through them and pick whichever one (or more) you’d like! Who knows, maybe you’ll have time for two or will want to come back and try another one after today’s retreat. Lastly, you are more than welcome to create your own activity as well if you have some better ideas : )

OPTION #1: Reverse Mail Call

At our youth camps we have Mail Call, when campers receive mail. At Virtual Family Camp we have Reverse Mail Call, when we send mail to others! With all that is going on there are people who might need some extra encouragement. In this option we give you some ideas of who you could write to, some help with writing a letter, and some ways you can make it special.

Supplies needed: Pen/pencil, paper, envelope, stamp
Optional supplies: Colored pencils, pens, or crayons, colored paper, stickers

OPTION #2: Take a Hike!

Hey, Families! It’s a gorgeous day and we want to invite you to get outside, get some fresh air, and have some fun “spotting” signs of spring! You can use the handouts that we have provided as a guide or just take your notebook with you and journal (or draw!) your sightings. As you hike, you can use your other senses to “spot” nature – sight, sound, smell, touch! Be sure to look and also LISTEN for signs of spring!

Bonus: Take a garbage bag with you as you hike … pick up trash, junk, recyclables, etc. that should NOT be spotted in nature. Have fun! The video shows a few things we spotted as we hiked around Camp Lebanon!

OPTION #3: Carpetball Tourney at Home

The game of Carpetball is iconic at Camp Lebanon. Even more, Carpetball tournaments are a staple of Family Camp! As you know, it’s a simple game where players alternate turns attempting to knock each other’s balls into the pocket by rolling a white cueball down a vertical table. The last person with balls still standing on their side wins! Well, what if you want to play at home? Then you’re gonna need to build your own Carpetball table! All you need is walls, something to use as carpet balls, and family/friends to play with. Have fun!

Supplies needed: Something to use as walls, something to use as balls, and something to use as pockets.
Share your designs! We would love to see pictures or videos of your home carpetball table.

OPTION #4: Chalk Time

One of the fun activities we enjoy at Camp Lebanon is chalk drawing on the Hub! So, grab some colorful chalk and have some fun designing pictures outside on your sidewalk or driveway! You can create an encouraging message or just have fun creating beautiful artwork. Here’s a fun option that we enjoy as a family: Mom or dad first draws a letter of the alphabet on the pavement. Then the kids create a picture out of the letter. Take turns drawing a letter for each family member … and enjoy the process of transforming letters into works of art! Bonus: Kids draw a letter for mom or dad!

OPTION #5: How Tall Can You Build It?

In this challenge, we want to see how tall you can build a tower using spaghetti and marshmallows! You can work together as a family, or split into teams or individuals for a little competition. You will have some fun building and learn a bit about how triangles are often used in architecture. We also provided some alternative supplies if you have trouble finding pasta or marshmallows in the store. Just grab your supplies, watch the challenge video (IMPORTANT!), and have fun!

Supplies needed: Uncooked spaghetti, marshmallows
Alternatives to Spaghetti: Toothpicks, small popsicle sticks, skewers
Alternatives to Marshmallows: Gumdrops, gummy worms (cut into pieces), gummy bears
